Wattisham Military Wives Choir is a fabulous group of wives and girlfriends of personnel serving at Wattisham Flying Station, Suffolk. The choir has around thirty members who meet up weekly to sing a range of uplifting songs, gossip and forget about life for a couple of hours.
The choir was set up in January 2012 by Sally Wilkinson, whilst her husband was deployed in Afghanistan. She was inspired by Gareth Malone’s BBC television series The Choir and, after witnessing how much a group of women could achieve in such a short space of time, wanted to see if she could recreate the same level of support and success for the wives of Wattisham. Sally found a choirmaster through an internet search, persuaded the Padre to let the choir use the base church, organised help with childcare so members could attend even if their husbands were away, started a Facebook group and the rest is history!
Since launching, the choir is proving to be a real hit. Not just for the members who have made some great friends, increased in confidence and found hidden abilities, but also for their families. Husbands of choir members (when they are in the country!) are regularly in the audience for choir performances and are hugely supportive and proud of their wives and the choir. Also, children of choir members sometimes attend the choir meetings and, much to the amusement of their mums, will often be heard singing the choir songs around the house (not always the right lyrics or particularly tunefully though!). Personnel at Wattisham Flying Station and other audiences that the choir have performed to have also been both impressed and moved by the choir.
The choir is run by a voluntary committee.
